If you’ve done a SASSA grant status check for the SRD grant and it said ‘debtor’, you might be confused. We might be able to help you understand what this means and what you have to do. You are regarded as a debtor if the Auditor General’s findings indicate that you have other sources of income and SASSA previously paid you when you didn’t qualify

Some applicants for the SASSA  R370 grant are being left confused with many questions as they see a ‘Debtor’ SASSA grant status reflected when they check their SASSA application status.
SASSA has given some insight into what this means.

The agency has said that should you see this, it means that you were paid in the last round but when SASSA does audits, you were found to not have been eligible to be receiving the SASSA SRD grant.

In further explaining it, SASSA says:

You are regarded as a debtor if the Auditor General’s findings indicate that you have other sources of income and SASSA previously paid when you didn’t qualify.

SASSA then says that you will need to pay back those funds before you are considered for the new round of the SASSA R370 grant.

So how would you know if you have a ‘debtor’ SRD status? Well, SASSA has said that you would be notified through SMS and you will then have to settle your debt.

You could also see a ‘debtor’ SRD status when doing a SASSA SRD status check using the SRD website or WhatsApp.

HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY COVID-19 SRD GRANT IS ON ‘DEBTOR’ STATUS?

  • You will be notified via SMS that you
owe SASSA and have to settle the debt
  • The application status on the SRD
website, whatsapp and SRD ops system will indicate Debtor
  • You cannot lodge an appeal for reconsideration if you were identified
    as a debtor.

What To Do When You Receive A ‘Debtor’ Sassa SRD Status

After checking your R370 grant application status, did it read ‘debtor’? Don’t panic, here’s a guide on what you need to do.

When you do a SASSA SRD status check, you might find that your R370 grant status is ‘debtor’ but what does this mean?

The ‘debtor’ Social Relief Distress (SRD) grant status simply means that the agency has discovered the individual’s other streams of money, thus the beneficiary was receiving undeserved monies at the time.

This comes after the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has audited their beneficiaries to check if they were eligible for the money that they received previously.

According to the Auditor-General’s findings, this occurred at the time the applicant didn’t qualify for the grant.

In such a case, Sassa said people will receive an SMS notification or be able to view the ‘debtor’ SRD status either on the Sassa website or their WhatsApp – the beneficiary is then required to pay back the money.

Beneficiaries are urged to pay back Sassa before they meet the criteria for the next round of payments. Payments will resume if you still qualify, once all the R370s are recovered.

Appeals are not permitted, should you receive this status.

The agency advises that people email them on GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za or alternatively call SASSA at 0800 60 10 11 – if you are not happy regarding your ‘debtor’ status.

Should you not be happy with this, you will need to contact SASSA. You can do this by ending an email to GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za or call SASSA at 0800 60 10 11.

You are not allowed to lodge a SASSA appeal if you were given a ‘debtor’ SASSA SRD status. Payments will resume if you still qualify, once all the R370s are recovered.
